All Aboard

16 April 2009

BBC Wales has announced three key appointments to its flagship production Doctor Who as the new series starring the 11th Doctor, Matt Smith, prepares for shooting.
Tracie Simpson (Producer of Doctor Who: Planet Of The Dead) and Peter Bennett (Producer of the forthcoming Torchwood series) have been appointed as producers on the multi-award winning BBC One show.
Beth Willis, Producer of the hugely popular and award-winning BBC drama series Ashes To Ashes, will join new Lead Writer Steven Moffat and Piers Wenger as an Executive Producer.
Willis will work closely with Bennett and Simpson - both veterans of the BBC One drama - on the day-to-day running of the new series as part of her executive role. She will combine her role on Doctor Who with work across a range of other BBC Wales dramas.
The appointment of the new team marks the start of a new chapter in the life of the series. Pre-production begins next month with shooting due to get underway later in the summer in and around the Cardiff area.
Doctor Who Lead Writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat said: "Beth and Tracie and Pete aren't the A Team, they're the people the A Team call. Tracie and Pete are the backstage stars of Doctor Who and having them on board as producers isn't just the best possible news for Matt Smith's first series, it's a massive relief.
"And Beth Willis, fresh from the brilliant Ashes To Ashes, is joining Piers and I as an executive so finally there'll be someone to wear the trousers."
BBC Wales Head of Drama Piers Wenger said: "Having Beth, Pete and Tracie on board is nothing short of thrilling. In their time on the show, Tracie and Pete have worked miracles. Joining forces with a talent like Beth will ensure that Doctor Who remains one of the most exciting and, frankly, formidable production teams

Russell T Davies said; "The next three specials will be shown in the second half of the year. It was said, in some interviews, that all three would air around Christmas time, but plans have changed since then. Events are going to darken around the Tenth Doctor as he heads towards the end of his tenure, and it all starts in Episode 4.16, as he and his co-stars are plunged into a world of terror, and we can no longer guarantee that the Doctor will escape unscathed!" The issue also reveals some guest stars who will appear in the episode, including; Peter O'Brien, Chook Sibtain, who previously appeared as Mark Grantham in The Sarah Jane Adventures, Alan Ruscoe, Sharon Duncan Brewster, Aleksandar Mikic, Gemma Chan, Cosima Shaw and Michael Goldsmith. Breaking News!!!

Reports have just come in from the BBC with the shock news that Matt Smith has removed himself from the role of playing the Doctor due to him being "unsure that he can bring the same gravitas to the role" that his soon to be predecessor David Tennant has done over the last four years, Steven Moffatt has stated that he is very upset and disappointed at the news and has been holding emergency talks in Cardiff with top BBC executives and has now asked 'Survivors' star Patterson Joseph to take on the role, who has agreed. Moffatt said in his press release that "Patterson is a great and worthy actor who has assured me that he will have complete dedication to the role".

Please note that this is just a roumour at the moment and may turn out to be false.

Last 2 Specials - Latest Update

Please note that this post contains spoilers regarding upcoming Doctor Who episodes. Bernard Cribbins, the actor who played Donna Noble's grandfather Wilfred Mott, is returning to Doctor Who for David Tennant's last 2 episodes as the Doctor. He was seen filming with David Tennant, David Harewood, men in military uniforms, and other people who were screaming, at Tredegar House in Newport. Filming for the last 2 specials will continue over the next few weeks, and it is rumoured that filming will take place at Donna's home over the coming days. At the moment it is unknown if Catherine Tate is actually reprising her role as Donna, but I will keep you informed on that. A couple of weeks ago Jessica Hynes, who previously appeared as Joan Redfern in Doctor Who series 3, was seen filming for the last 2 specials. She seemed to be playing a woman called Verity Newman, who was signing copies of her book, A Journal of Impossible Things. The last 2 Doctor Who specials are expected to air at around Christmas time.
